The architectural term, cornerstone, is used several times in scripture in reference to Jesus as the chief foundation stone of the church. The cornerstone is the stone, on which the entire building structure depends.
While regular cornerstones are located on each corner of a building. The cornerstone or foundation stone is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. This cornerstone is the largest, most solid, and most skillfully made of all the stones. It may contain scriptures and other identifying information. It is the stone by which all other stones will be set in place, hence, determining the position of the entire building.
Since the chief cornerstone was the foundational stone in ancient architecture, from which all measurements began, obviously this position belongs to Jesus. Other scriptures, Psalm 118:22, Matthew 21:42-44, 1 Corinthians 3:11, Isaiah 28:16, 1 Peter 2: 5-7 and Acts 4:11 make it clear that Jesus Himself is the foundation. Jesus said He is the Cornerstone that His church stands on as a united body of believers, both Jews, and Gentiles.
