How Do I Find God?

You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. ~ Jeremiah 29:13

“How do I find God?” I heard this question the other day and it seemed strange to me. I found it difficult to fathom such a question. My first reaction was that God is not lost; therefore, He does not need to be found. But the more I thought about the question. . . the more it deserved further consideration.

The word find denotes that you locate God through your efforts; while, seek means that you search, and in the process of searching—God reveals Himself to you. I realize that it sounds like a play on words, but it is not. Simply put… you do not have the ability to find God without Him revealing Himself to you. Therefore, your role is to seek God and He will find you and thereby you find Him through Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

You can seek God by reading the Bible, praying, and asking Christians for support. When seeking God, it is important to give Him your full attention with an attitude of fear, reverence, admiration, and worship while having a humble and repentant heart that trusts His grace.

The greatest reward of seeking God is the promise that you find Him, and, in finding Him, you find rest (Matthew 11:28-30), life (Amos 5:4-6), strength (Isaiah 40:31), joy (Isaiah 35:10), gladness (1 Chronicles 16:10), deliverance (Psalm 34:4-5), hope (Lamentation 3:21-25), blessings (Psalm 119:2), satisfaction (Psalm 107:9), discernment (Ephesians 5:15-16), understanding (Proverbs 28:5), and wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:25). Furthermore, seeking God’s Kingdom leads to righteousness (Hosea 10:12).

Back to the original question, “How Do I Find God?” The answer is—you must seek Him (Deuteronomy 4:29) and believe that He exists (Romans 1:19-20). If you seek God, you will find Him because He finds you!
