In God We Take Refuge

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. ~ Psalm 46:1

Have you ever felt defeated, overwhelmed, and afraid? Trapped in a raging storm for far too long? In difficult times like these, we often search for a hiding place. Sometimes, we try to hide in excessiveness—booze, gluttony, lust—to name a few. Other times, we peddle our peace of mind chasing wealth, influence, or keeping up with the Joneses. The pursuit of these things do not satisfy after the thrill of the moment is gone. But there is a place of refuge.

Refuge is the condition of being safe or sheltered from danger or trouble. In other words, taking refuge in God means that we find complete safety and satisfaction in Him. He is our shield from destruction, discouragement, excessiveness, loneliness, insecurity. He is our Comforter. . . our Provider. Shelter in times of storms!

I enjoy reading mysteries, especially those that end with a pleasant, unexpected twist. Where the best place to hide something is to put it in plain sight. That is how I feel about our hiding place in God. For we are in plain sight—as we go about our daily routines or face the unexpected. Yet, we are safe and sheltered! Regardless of the situation, what we have or do not have. Irrespective of who is watching, plotting, or setting traps. God almighty is our protection.

God is all-powerful—all-knowing—our ever-present help. Therefore, we must let God be our refuge—our safe place—our hideaway. The place we run to when we are afraid. When we need a friend. Or think all hope is gone. And He will give us protection and rest from weariness because He cares! Through Jesus Christ, we have access to God’s unlimited love, grace, and favor everyday. Psalm 34:18, tells us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”. So, let us be safe and encouraged—in God we take refuge.

God bless. . . I am Wiley’s granddaughter.
